Farmland Preservation

Purchase of Development Rights

Established in 1996, New York's Farmland Protection Program provides grants to eligible
counties and towns to permanently protect land for agriculture.
The grants are used to purchase the development rights on farmland.
Eligible landowners may apply to the Ulster County Agriculture and Farmland Protection Board for these funds.

Agricultural District Inclusion

An Ag District is a geographic area which consists predominantly of viable agricultural land.
Agricultural operations within the district are the priority land use and afforded benefits and protections
to promote the continuation of farming and preservation of agricultural land.  Landowners with eligible parcels may apply to be included.

Agriculture Assessment

The Agricultural Districts Law also provides for reduced property tax bills for land in agricultural production by
limiting the assessment of such land to its prescribed agricultural assessment value.
Owners whose land satisfies the eligibility requirements may apply for an agricultural assessment.
